Tata Steel set to slash 1.500 UK Jobs

Tata Steel, the Indian steelmaker, is to make up to 1,500 workers in Scunthorpe and Teesside redundant in an effort to reshape one of its lossmaking divisions in the UK hit by falling demand, particularly from the construction industry.
The company blamed a “double whammy” of slow growth and future carbon taxes for the move, which will lead to the closure of a mill and a blast furnace mothballed for the second time in two years. Some 1,200 jobs will go in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, and 300 on Teesside, adding to the more than 2,000 cut by the company during the recession.
